The world is becoming more open to and aware of the benefits of CBD. While CBD is natural and extracted from a cannabis plant, scientists have been experimenting and have produced synthetic cannabinoids as well.
What exactly does the term “synthetic cannabinoids” mean? And are synthetic cannabinoids better than their natural counterpart?
Let’s take a look at the difference between the two.
What Are Natural Cannabinoids?
Natural cannabinoids work by mimicking the compounds the human body produces naturally.
These compounds are known as “endocannabinoids.” The word “endo” means “from within.” This means that cannabinoids restore balance to the body from within.
The cannabinoids extracted from the cannabis plant are known as “phytocannabinoids.”
You probably know “phytocannabinoids” as “CBD” and “THC.” While THC is known to cause a person to feel “high,” CBD offers relief from various medical conditions, especially chronic pain, nausea, and anxiety.
When natural cannabinoids enter our body, they mix with different receptors in our body. CB1 receptors are part of your nervous system, whereas, CB2 receptors are found in the cells of your immune system. THC impacts CB1 receptors, meaning it has an impact on your brain. On the other hand, CBD affects CB2 receptors.
What Are Synthetic Cannabinoids?
So, what are synthetic cannabinoids and what do they do? Simply put, these cannabinoids are produced chemically to have a certain impact on the body and brain. While most people believe that synthetic means better, research shows otherwise.
According to studies, synthetic cannabinoids are twice as potent as THC and have severe side-effects like:
- Chest pain
- Vomiting and nausea
- Vision problems
- Kidney failure
- Blood pressure problems
- Heart problems
Which One is Better?
The million dollar question is which one should you choose: synthetic or natural?
The difference between the two is obvious. While both mix with receptors in the body, the main difference is that synthetic cannabinoids are structured to behave a certain way. For different people, natural cannabinoids work differently. But with synthetic cannabinoids, the main problem is over stimulation.
They’re far stronger than their natural counterparts. Therefore, they can be dangerous to consume. Some people may not experience any side-effects, but that doesn’t ring true for everyone. Secondly, synthetic cannabinoids are still being tested by scientists. And it can even take years or decades to perfect them.
On the other hand, natural cannabinoids have been tested over and over again by researchers. Researchers have only found them to be beneficial.
In fact, in a separate study in Sao Paulo, scientists found that CBD had the ability to release the 5-HT1A receptor, which helps improve mood and combat anxiety.
Research published by the FEBS Letters shows that CBD can help regulate sleep by activating certain neurons in the brain.
So we can conclude that natural cannabinoids are better than their synthetic counterparts.
